GibbsCAM 2000 Highlights

General | Production Mill | SolidSurfacer | CAD Interoperability | Solids Import

Continuing in the GibbsCAM™ tradition of delivering power, speed and efficiency without sacrificing ease of use, GibbsCAM 2000 incorporates several new enhancements designed to make NC programming faster and easier through powerful functionality. Most notable are the Wizards technology, Generation II Toolpath Engine, CATIA and VDA-FS CAD interoperability options, and the Reporter.

General

Wizards Technology
Gibbs has developed a way to make GibbsCAM's easy to use interface even more efficient for the creation of nested stock shapes and multi-process holes.

Stock Wizard
The Stock Wizard guides the user through defining a variety of stock shapes.
  • Four simple steps define cylindrical or rectangular stock
  • Supports cylindrical or rectangular pocket
Hole Wizard
The Hole Wizard guides the user through the creation of multi-process holes using tabular and user-supplied data.
  • Standardized hole data stored in external tables
  • User hole making preferences are captured and used to direct system
  • Recommends tooling and processes
  • Resulting operations maintain associative relationship to Hole Wizard to allow efficient modification
Reporter
Create a variety of reports to communicate important manufacturing information to the shop floor, such as setup, tooling lists, and operation summary.
  • Operates with both Milling and Turning modules
  • Can output a wide range of system data, including cut part rendering images, and tooling and process data
  • Three example templates supplied for part, tooling and operation summary sheets
  • Uses Microsoft Excel® to format report
  • Users can customize report format to their own corporate standards

Production Mill
Trochoidal Pocketing
  • Circular motion provides non-load motion for chip removal and cooling
  • No sharp corners so higher feed rates can be maintained Popular style of machining for high strength materials
2D/3D Spiral
  • True spiral motion with arc segments
  • Spiral into hardened material

SolidSurfacer
Generation II Toolpath Engine
Gibbs has continued developing a new toolpath generation technology (initially released in GibbsCAM ’99), which creates a smoother, faster and more efficient toolpath from a solid body. This release adds intersection machining, corner clean-up, solid contouring/pocketing, and zig-zag pocketing.
  • Toolpath can be constrained to stock in a variety of manners
  • Toolpath constrained by normal vector
  • Fixture clearance amount can be uniquely specified
Pocketing/Contour
  • Supports open cavities, single-selected floor faces
  • Not sensitive to vertical walls
  • Supports containment shapes
Intersection Machining
  • Intersection machining can be driven by edges or faces, or the system can automatically determine intersections from selection set
  • Intersection machining supports both pencil trace or corner clean-up
  • Toolpath created along or across intersection
Zig-Zag Pocketing
  • Supports step-over greater than tool radius
  • Option to hit parallel walls
  • Unlimited number of islands
  • Pre-/post-clean periphery pass
  • Periphery ramp motion
  • Clean-up back wall prior to continuing to next stroke

High-Speed Machining Support
A number of new capabilities have been added to support high-speed machining. These include NURBS output and plunge roughing.

NURBS Output
  • Creates NURBS output for lace cutting with ball end mills
  • Allows access to advanced controller capabilities, such as high-speed machining look-ahead
  • Post processor support for Fanuc and Siemens NURBS formats
  • Capabilities derived from NURBS technology for non-NURBS controllers
  • Exact arc fitting for arc output (primary plane)
  • Polyline output for smoother finish
Plunge Roughing
  • End cutting tools plunged into stock to remove large amounts of material
  • Axial tool stress minimizes deflection
  • Deep cavity application

CAD Interoperability
Support for two new CAD formats is now available for GibbsCAM. Once the CAD data is read in, GibbsCAM’s powerful surface healing and stitching capability can create solid models from it. Layer information is now transferred to support referencing.
CATIA Reader Option
A direct reader for CATIA v4 format model files is now available. This allows surface data to be read from a CATIA v4 model file without requiring a seat of CATIA.
VDA-FS Reader Option
Import surface data from VDA-FS format files and create solid models from them.

Solids Import
Updated Solid Kernel Modelers
GibbsCAM’s support for the Parasolid and ACIS solid modeler kernels has been updated with this release. Parasolid v11.1 and ACIS v6.0 are now supported maintaining GibbsCAM’s compatibility with the vast number of CAD systems based on either kernel.
Updated Direct Read Capability
GibbsCAM 2000 has been updated to be fully compatible with SolidWorks 2000 and Solid Edge V8.
